The first major blockbuster to bring September 11 imagery to the multiplex, War of the Worlds has broken a number of records on its release...
Starring Tom Cruise, the Steven Spielberg adaptation of the HG Wells classic earned $1,192,263 on its first day in Australia.
Not only is it the year's second-biggest opening day behind Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, it's the biggest opening for a movie starring Tom Cruise and also for any movie made by Steven Spielberg, according to distributor UIP. The box office figures dismiss fears of a local backlash against Cruise in defence of Nicole Kidman following his latest public love affair with Katie Holmes. The film, which also stars Sydney's Miranda Otto, should kick-start the Australian box office – which is currently 11 per cent down from the same time last year. The anticipation and heft behind the $169 million film also seems to have outweighed Tom Cruise's dubious publicity exploits of recent weeks. The effects-laden story of an alien invasion evokes many images of panic and dust-covered people running for their lives.
